There’s nothing like the satisfaction of vaping on a coil you built yourself. Rebuildable atomisers put you in control of resistance, surface area, and wicking — the three pillars of flavour and vapour. Whether you prefer the ritual of dripping, the convenience of a tank, or the versatility of an RDTA, this guide walks you through the hardware and skills to build like a pro.

1. RDA vs. RTA vs. RDTA 

• RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomiser): Purest flavour. You drip directly onto the coil and cotton. Ideal for flavour testing and cloud chasing. Requires frequent dripping.
• RTA (Rebuildable Tank Atomiser): A build deck housed inside a tank. Once wicked correctly, it offers the convenience of a tank with the performance of a rebuildable. Can be finicky to wick.
• RDTA: A hybrid with a tank below the deck. Wick tails hang into the liquid. Great flavour, easier to wick than some RTAs, but can be bulky.

2. Coil Materials & Styles

• Kanthal A1: Great for wattage mode, easy to work with, holds shape.
• Ni80 (Nichrome): Faster ramp-up, slightly lower resistance, bright flavour.
• SS316L: Works in both wattage and TC, clean taste.
• Exotic coils: Claptons, fused Claptons, and aliens increase surface area for denser vapour and more intense flavour. Beginners should start with simple round wire builds before moving to exotics.

3. Building Your First Coil 

• Tools: A coil jig or screwdriver set, ceramic tweezers, wire cutters, and an ohmmeter (or regulated mod).
• Wrapping: Wrap tightly around a 2.5–3.0 mm rod, keeping spacing even. Aim for 0.3–0.5 Ω for a dual-coil setup.
• Installation: Secure leads under screws, pulse at low wattage to check for hotspots, and gently strum the coil until it glows evenly from centre out.
• Wicking: Thread unbleached organic cotton through the coil, trim tails, and fluff the ends. In an RTA, the cotton should just touch the juice ports without packing them tightly.

4. Troubleshooting Rebuildables

• Hotspot: A coil section glowing brighter. Strum again or tighten connections.
• Dry hits: Too much cotton or it’s choking the juice flow. Reduce wick density.
• Leaking: Not enough cotton in the juice channel or overfilling. Ensure wick tails fill the ports without gaps.
• Muted flavour: Build position too high or low. Align the coil with airflow slots for best flavour.
